Development of Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management

    The final conference of the project "Development of Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management in Local Governments in Serbia", which is implemented under the Exchange 3 Programme, was held on 8 December 2011 in Dimitrovgrad. The meeting was opened by Mayor of Dimitrovgrad, Dr. Vladica Dimitrov, and then the participants were addressed by: Ivan Božović, a representative of the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities - Project Monitor, Božidar Tanić, Project Manager, Velimir Mitrović, Assistant Mayor of Čačak for local economic development and environmental protection, and Radomir Zlokolica, Director of the PUC from Žabalj.

    The conference was attended by Miloje Vojinović, Director of PUC "Komunalac" from Čačak, Slobodan Antov, Director of PC 'Komunalac" in Dimitrovgrad, Dušan Jakovljević, Director of Enviteh company, Danka Ranđić, coordinator from Čačak, Dejan Cvetkov, Coordinator from Dimitrovgrad, Anita Kostov, Training Expert, and Mirjana Panov, Technical Operations Expert, representatives of local self-government, schools, media and NGO representatives.

    Dr. Vasil Velčev, Deputy Mayor of Dimitrovgrad and partners from the Republic of Germany: Andreas Hakental, Mayor of Morbach, and Dragana Oberst, project coordinator and director of the Centre for Technology Transfer for Southeast Europe, and Professor Thomas Keller from the Institute IFAS from Birkenfeld participated in the work through the internet video link.

    Mayor of Morbach thanked for the excellent cooperation and successful implementation of the Project, and expressed a wish for further cooperation between the partner municipalities through new projects, and promised generous support.

    Then the Serbian experts on the project held a video presentation of their work and activities conducted, and Professor Thomas Keller has transferred the positive practice of municipal solid waste management in Germany and some developing countries.

    The achieved results of the project primarily are: Created conditions for establishing a system of comprehensive education of citizens in waste management, created conditions for the creation and further development of the separation of municipal solid waste in the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad and Žabalj, and established process of more efficient utilization of waste, as well as reduced level of waste in landfills that can be reused.

    In the end, the Project management team presented Practicum "Integrated Management of Municipal Solid Waste in the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad" which is the result of implemented project activities.
